Police inspection

If you are stopped by the police for a road inspection:

• Stop at the place shown by a policeman
• Open a window and  place you hands on a driving wheel
• Do not go out of the vehicle! Do not turn of the engine (unless you are sked by a policeman)
• A policeman will introduce himself (will inform you about his or her rank, name and surname) and will inform you about a reason of stoppage.
A policeman in an uniform is not obliged to show documents (you can aks for them), a policeman not wearing an uniform is obliged to show his identity card.
• Wait for policeman instructions. You might be asked to show your driving license, registration book, personal liability insurance.
• A policeman can ask you and passengers to go out of the vehicle for a personal inspection and/or vehicle inspection
• You may be asked to enter a police car

If you have a permanent or a temporal residence permit, in case of a fine and penal points, you do not have to accept them and then, your case enters to a regional court.  You will be called to a court for a settlement.

If you do not have a residence permit, you will be obliged to pay a fine in cash. The police may give you a lift to the ATM or the exchange office. If you cannot pay for the mandate, the car can be confiscated and towed at your expense to the police car park.

NOTE!
Under no circumstances you must not flee from the police. It is also forbidden to offer policemen bribes.

NOTE!
Police may not accept money for the mandates in the form of cash! One pays for the mandate within 7 days of receipt, by the  bank transfer or postal transfer. Mandates cash are accepted only from persons temporarily staying in the Polish territory, or who have no fixed residence address in Poland.

Policemen have a right to card people in every place. It is not an unusual situation and every person can be carded in a street, both Poles and foreigners.

Even if you have problems with understanding a policeman, you should show any identity document - passport, ID card, driving license, residence permit.  Usually, after checking the identity, you are free to go.  In case of communication problems and when a policeman does not allow you to go, you may be taken to a police station to make explanations in your mother tongue.  In order to save your time in such case, it is best to call your acquaintance who could be a translator.

If you do not have any identity document, a policemen has the right to take you to a police station for identity determining.
