In Poland learning is compulsory for child until finishing 18 years. „School duty” concerns all children irrespective of the legality of the stay, the legal status of the child and his parents. The school year starts on 1st September, usually ends on 20th June. Child’s school obligation starts at the beginning of the school year in this calendar year in which the child is finishing 7 years and lasts until the completion of the junior high school, however not longer than until 18 years. At parent’s request a child finishing 6 years before the 1st September can begin learning at the primary school, only if he demonstrates the psychophysical maturity for going to the school. The decision about earlier child’s acceptance to the primary school is made by a headmaster after seeking the public opinion of the psychological and pedagogical clinic. The child who was accepted earlier to the primary school is dismissed from the duty of undergoing the annual pre-school preparation.
You can send your six-year-old child to the school!
According to new regulations introduced in 2009 you have the right to send your child to the first class of the primary school in school year 2009/2010, if your child was born in the period between 1st January and 30th April 2003. A headmaster in this case does not have the right to refuse to accept your child to the school!
If your child was born in the period between 30th May and 31st December 2003, you can request your child to be accepted to school. In this case a headmaster can refuse to accept the child to school, if child did not attend the nursery school earlier or if at the given school there is not enough place for six-year-olds.
Children inhabited within the circumference of the given primary school and at the request of parents/legal carers – children inhabited beyond the circumference of the given primary school (in the case that the school has vacancies) are ex officio accepted to the first class of the common primary school. Learning period at the primary school lasts 6 years and ends with an examination. The examination does not have formal consequences for the choice of future education. The child, who will leave the primary school, has primary education.
